Mr. Garland Clifton Tice Sr., 83, of 119 Gatlin Street, Williamston, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Martin General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Todd Moore and Wayne Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Tice cemetery.
Mr. Tice was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Martin County. He was the son of the late Lizzie Idell Jones Tice and Noah Thomas Tice. On March 20, 1937, he was married to Erla Ruth Corey, who preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 1952. Mr. Tice was a veteran of World War II. He served in the European theater in Germany. He also received the Presidential Citation for crossing the Rhine River and received two battle stars when he crossed over the Rhyne Hurn Canals. After his duties he returned home to continue to farm until 1958 when he moved to Washington where he lived until he moved to IHS Nursing Home in Williamston. He was also a member of the Veteran of Foreign War-VFW Chapter 6088, a member of the Disabled American Veterans VFW 48, the American Legion Post 163. He retired as a long distance tractor trailer driver in 1972 after 18 years of service. He retired (disability) Sept. 24, 1974. Mr. Tice was also a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, G.C. Tice and wife Sue of Williamston; three daughters, Mary Alice Tice Roberson and her late husband, John A. "Bud" Roberson of Williamston, Erla Faye White Mizelle and husband Tommy of Jamesville and Priscilla Tice Hardison and husband Jim of Washington; one sister, Susie Silbert of Inaltric, Fla.; one brother, Justus Tice of Washington; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Piney Grove Baptist Church Fellowship Hall and at other times at the home of Mary Alice Roberson, 4014 W. Main Street.
