Bank of America wins blood drive

A Red Cross trademark bloodhound sits atop the trophy presented Tuesday to Susan Strong.
Strong, service manager for Bank of America, accepted the award for the bank, winner of the Battle of the Banks Blood Drive, which was held at Masonic Lodge No. 675 on Feb. 11.
Woolard serves as chairwoman for the blood drive.
Bank of America employees donated about half of the 40 pints collected from five area banks. First South, East Carolina Bank, Wachovia and State Employees Credit Union employees gave as well. All area banks were invited to compete.
Woolard, who is a regular blood donor, said there are many reasons for giving, but "the most important thing is saving lives."
Ellen West, Red Cross account manager, added another good reason for giving blood. She cited research that has shown being a regular donor -- at least three times a year -- can reduce the risk of heart attacks by 50 percent.
The Battle of the Banks Blood Drive, said West, now has a permanent home -- Masonic Lodge No. 675 at the corner of Fifth and Wilson streets.
