PLYMOUTH -- Plymouth's baseball and softball teams picked up victories in Tuesday's season openers.
Jimmy Sandy and Brant West combined on a one-hitter as Plymouth beat Bertie 6-1 in the baseball game. Sandy gave up one hit, struck out seven and walked two. West pitched the final two innings, striking out three.
Ashley Saunders did one better in the softball game, allowing no hits, walking one and striking out 12 in a 4-0 victory. The sophomore had a perfect game going until she walked the next-to-last batter.
In the baseball game, Plymouth struck for six runs in the fifth after Bertie took a 1-0 lead. Roderick James' squeeze bunt with the bases loaded scored Justin Smith, who walked. West was then hit by a pitch, scoring Bryant Culbreth, who singled to left.
Sandy then doubled in A.J. Johnson, who was hit by a pitch, and James, for a 4-1 lead. Dustin Edwards then hit a single that scored West and Sandy.
In the softball game, Frannie Pittman singled in Heather Williams in the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead. Pittman was thrown out trying to take second, ending the inning. But Emily Swain drove in Saunders and Brittany Harrell, who both singled, in the second to stretch the lead to 3-0. Swain drove in Dana Oliver, who also singled, in the fourth for the final margin.
Plymouth hosts Jamesville Friday.

Jamesville softball wins opener
CHOCOWINITY -- Jamesville lost a great pitcher to graduation in Constance Williams, but the Bullets found another solid pitcher in freshman Heather Mobley.
The Jamesville pitcher fanned 11 batters en route to a 21-2 season-opening win over Southside on Tuesday. Mobley, taking over for Williams, who is now pitching at Louisburg College, was also backed by a solid offensive showing.
The Bullets (1-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. Dale Mobley got things rolling with a single. After Ashley Lilley followed with a hit, Heather Barber brought both runners in with a triple. Kelly Green and Michelle Barber also had RBI hits in the frame.
Jamesville added four in the third and eight in the fourth to break the game wide open.
Kendall Sadler led the Seahawks (0-1) at the plate by going 2-for-2.
The Bullets travel to Plymouth on Friday.

West Craven falls to New Bern
NEW BERN -- West Craven fell behind early and could never catch up with New Bern, falling 8-3 in Tuesday's non-conference game.
New Bern (2-1) scored twice in the first and pushed the lead to 8-0 in the sixth on a three-run homer by Kenny Slyte. West Craven (1-1) scored all three of its runs in the seventh. Lemmie Barwick delivered the key blow with a two-run hit.
Trevor Heath picked up the win for New Bern.
West Craven plays host to Greene Central on Friday.

Pam Pack JV girls win
GREENVILLE -- Opening the season with a win, the Washington Pam Pack junior varsity softball team defeated J.H. Rose, 6-4, on Tuesday.
Liz Robinson pitched a complete-game for the Pam Pack (1-0), allowing one earned run on just three hits.
The Pam Pack started off well by scoring three times in the first. Sarah Ann Faucette led off with a walk and Cameron Whitehead moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. After Holly Norris reached base, Carrie Amici slapped a hit. Robinson then brought in two runs with a hit of her own.
Robinson went 2-for-3 in the game, while Melissa Spain went 1-for-3 with a double.
Washington returns to action Friday at home against Rose.
P.S. Jones falls
MOREHEAD CITY -- The P.S. Jones Middle School soccer team lost its first game of the season on Monday, falling to Morehead 4-2.
Archie Griffin scored P.S. Jones' only goal, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Morehead's defense mistakenly scored the Demons' other goal. Cody Cunningham was in goal for the Demons.
P.S. Jones (3-1) goes to Havelock today.
