Marvin Burke didn't enjoy his first game as Washington's varsity baseball coach nearly as much as J.H. Rose coach Ronald Vincent enjoyed winning the 605th game of his career.
The Pam Pack (0-1) opened their season with a 13-1 loss in five innings to the Rampants (1-0) on a wet, soggy Tuesday afternoon. Rose jumped on Washington starter Billy Moore for nine runs on 10 hits in the first inning.
With one out, Walter Covington started Rose's uprising with a sharp single up the middle. That was followed by four more singles, including RBI raps by David Forbes and Alex White. Derick Cox later added a two-run single that made it 5-0. Kevin Hodges followed with a two run-triple.
Covington followed with an RBI single, his second hit of the inning. Brack Massey, who also had two hits in the frame, then laced a double to left for a 9-0 advantage.
Moore was lifted after facing 13 batters. Travis Rogerson came on and got White to fly out to left to end the inning. Rogerson would go on to pitch 4 1/3 innings, allowing four unearned runs and scattering four hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Mike Flye, a 6-4, 190-pound senior, did a solid job against the Pam Pack. He allowed just three hits, striking out seven and not walking a batter in four innings.
Flye did plunk Washington's Alan Rowe on the elbow in the second inning. The elbow continued to swell and Rowe was taken to the hospital for X-rays.
Washington's lone run came in the fourth. Blake Jamison reached base after the Rose catcher couldn't hold onto a third strike. Jamison stole second, moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on Corey Calloway's groundout.
Calloway, Washington's leadoff hitter, had two of his team's hits. He led off the first with a single to left, then beat out an infield hit in the third.
In that first inning, the Pam Pack had a chance to climb back into the game. After Calloway's hit, Carlos Guilford reached on an error and the runners moved up to second and third with nobody out. But Flye was able to strike out the next three batters to keep it a 9-0 game.
Vincent said he believes the Pam Pack will be a good team down the road.
Burke said his squad must continue to work toward improvement.
Washington visits Edenton today, then travels to Greenville for a rematch with the Rampants on Friday.
