Pam Pack junior Bryan Nicholls and the boys tennis team defeated Manteo in the blustery cold on Monday, winning 4-2 in singles play and sweeping the doubles matches 3-0. Nicholls gutted out a three-set win, giving Washington the decisive singles win.
Nicholls, a junior, who normally plays in the No. 1 spot, played in the No. 2 slot because of illness. Struggling with his service game, Nichols dropped the opening set to Manteo's Matthew Cahoon, 6-2. Nichols got control of his serve and the match in the second set and won going away.
Nicholls took a 4-2 advantage in the second set, hitting back-to-back winners on a shot down the line and then lobbing over the taller Cahoon. Cahoon battled back and nearly tied the set at 5-5, when Nicholls double faulted on consecutive points, making the score 30-40.
The Pam Pack (1-1) got a tremendous boost from freshmen Kevin Stancill, the No. 3 seed, and Craig Davis, the No. 4 seed. Stancill defeated Ben Mullis, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, while Davis breezed through Myers Fuller in 45 minutes, 6-1, 6-1. Then the diaper dandies paired up for a convincing doubles win.
Manteo (0-1) has only had five practices thus far as head coach Dan Corbin finished coaching girls' basketball a week ago. Corbin received strong performances at the top and bottom of the lineup as No. 1 seed Cy Corbin and No. 6 Cory Evans won easily. Corbin blew past Graham Toler 6-0, 6-2, while Evans defeated Kyle Stalls, 6-2, 6-3.
Washington, fresh off of Nicholls' thrilling win, used the momentum to its advantage and took the doubles' matches with ease. The pair of Graham and Nicholls defeated Corbin and Cahoon by an 8-6 count in the No. 1 position.
Stancill and Davis cruised to an 8-3 win over Mullis and Evans in the No. 2 position.
Lilley and Stalls pummeled Kenny Bresson and Myers Fuller, 8-2.
Walker said the team will learn much about themselves in their matchup today with C.B. Aycock.
