BEAR GRASS -- Stephanie Duke fired a one-hitter to lead Bear Grass to a 3-2 win over Plymouth in non-conference softball action on Tuesday.
The win kept the Bears (4-0) undefeated. Duke struck out one and walked five.
Bear Grass scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, then held on after Plymouth (4-1) scored twice in the seventh. In the first, Lindsay Shaw singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Jamie Webb's bunt single. Amber Everette made it 2-0 in the second when she singled, then proceeded to steal second, third and home.
In the fourth Krista Horn doubled and later stole home to make it 3-0.
Plymouth scored twice in the seventh. Ashley Midgette brought in Ashley Saunders, who reached on an error, with a sacrifice fly. Kim Robinson later doubled home a run to make it 3-2.
The two teams meet again Thursday when Bear Grass visits Plymouth.

Viking baseball team still perfect
BEAR GRASS -- Remaining undefeated, the Plymouth Vikings took a 13-5 win over Bear Grass in Tuesday's non-conference baseball contest.
The Vikings (5-0), ranked fifth in the Class 1-A Baseball America/N.C. High School Baseball Coaches poll, scored six times in the third and put it away with a five-run seventh.
Jimmy Sandy (2-0) picked up the win. The senior fanned nine and walked two in six innings of work.
Brant West hit a two-run single in the six-run third. Roderick James had an RBI double and Letrell Cherry knocked in a run with a single.
Bear Grass (1-3) scored its first run in the first. Bobby Webb singled, moved to second on Brent Wynne's sacrifice and then scored on Allen Mobley's single.
The Vikings host Bear Grass on Thursday.

Southside softball earns victory
CHOCOWINITY -- Ashley Nanney came up with four hits, helping lead Southside to a 22-10 win over North Edgecombe in non-conference softball action on Tuesday.
Tanya Harris ended the game with a double in the fifth, giving the Seahawks (2-3) the win. The game was stopped because of the 10-run rule.
Jennifer Swain picked up the pitching win. She fanned five and walked six while not allowing an earned run.
The Seahawks host Mattamuskeet today.

Pungo falls to Ridgecroft
RIDGECROFT -- The Pungo Christian Academy Raiders suffered their first loss of the season, falling 7-4 to Ridgecroft on Tuesday.
Ridgecroft held leads of 3-0 after three innings and 7-2 after four and then held on for the win. Allison Phelps suffered the loss despite striking out 11 batters, though she did walk seven.
The Raiders (2-1) play host to Wanchese on Friday.

Edmondson sets school record
CHOCOWINITY -- Senior Eli Edmondson set a school record for Southside on Tuesday, helping the Seahawks tie for first place with Williamston in a tri-meet with Northside.
Edmondson set a school record with his shove of 44 feet, one inch in the shot put event to take first place. Southside and Williamston both finished with 82 points, while Northside accumulated 11 points.
Southside nipped Williamston in the girl's meet, outscoring the Tigers by a 68-65 margin. Northside finished with 40 points.
Melanie Deans was a triple-winner for the Seahawks. She won the 1600 (6:03.6), 800 (2:42.4) and 3200 (13:38.9) events. Tori Knight had wins in the 100 (13.46) and 200 (28.48) dash events. Natalie Perez took wins in the shot (31-4) and discus (91-7 1/2), while Terri Hines won the high jump (4-8) and 400 dash.
Latroya Bracey was a double winner for Williamston, winning the triple jump (31-7 3/4) and 300 hurdles (51.46).
Amanda Preston continues to set the pace for Northside by qualifying for regionals in the 3200 run. Danielle Huffman took second place in the discus.
On the boys' side, winners for Southside included Jason Lilley in the 200 dash (24.28), Robbie Deans in the 3200 (11:34), Nick Senteno in the 1600 (5:10.6), Travis Midgette in the 400 dash (53.21) and Antonio Carter in the 300 hurdles (46.43).
For Williamston, B.J. Wiggins earned wins in the high jump (6-0) and 100 dash (11.51), while Darius Coley won the long jump (20-4 3/4) and triple jump (40-9).
Justin Waters took second in the discus for Northside, while Terrance Leggett was second in the long jump.
Southside hosts Perquimans on Thursday.
P.S. Jones wins opener
Graham Fulcher struck out three and belted a double in helping P.S. Jones capture a 15-5 win in their season-opening baseball game Monday afternoon.
The Blue Demons have had several games postponed due to rain and were forced to open the season against Coastal Middle School Conference foe G. C. Fields.
Lee Watkins paced P.S. Jones with a pair of hits in his three trips to the plate. Watkins scored three runs, including a two-run homer. Trey Whitley also scored three times. He was 2-for-3. Hardy Andrews and J.D. Robinson had two hits each. Roberson had a double. Jeffrey Boyd also had a double on the day.
P.S. Jones will travel to Havelock Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. start time, then go to Williamston on Thursday.
