To the Editor:
Much has been said of the war effort, and of our president's use of his Saviour's name, the Lord Jesus Christ. We sadly have come far away from the days of a famous and dearly loved U.S. Senate chaplain Peter Marshall who boldly stated: "Our Father in Heaven, help us to see that it is better to fail in a cause that will ultimately succeed than to succeed in a cause that will ultimately fail…. May Thy will be done here and may Thy program be carried out, above party and personality, beyond time and circumstance for the good of America and the peace of the world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
As people become disgruntled over those in authority asking for aid and blessing in the name of Jesus Christ, may we be reminded of the words of Patrick Henry: "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." (America's God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations by William J. Federer)
