PLYMOUTH -- Plymouth's baseball team made six errors and had just one hit in an 8-2 loss to Perquimans Tuesday in the Four Rivers Conference opener for both teams.
Plymouth got two runs in the first on Perquimans' errors. Jimmy Sandy walked, stole second and scored on an error on a ball hit by Dustin Edwards. Edwards scored when Jacob Bowen reached on an error.
Perquimans scored five in the second and never looked back. Josh Lassister got the win while Brant West suffered the loss. West gave up one earned run on five hits, striking out a season-high 12 in six innings. He also hit two batters.
Plymouth (5-1, 0-1) goes to Northside Friday.

Tigers beat Gates County
WILLIAMSTON -- J.J. House's two-run homer in the third inning propelled Williamston to a 9-1 victory over Gates County in a Four Rivers Conference baseball game Tuesday.
House's blast scored Brody Bland, who doubled two outs earlier. Williamston (4-1, 1-0) added a run in the fourth when Brad Roach singled, stole second and scored one out later on Clay Griffin's single.
Williamston blew the game open with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Dee Eubanks picked up the win, giving up two hits, striking out 10 and walking five in five innings. Mike Sheperd pitched the sixth, giving up a hit and striking out one. Trey Warren finished up, giving up an unearned run on a hit, striking out two.
Williamston hosts Washington Thursday.

Bear Grass baseball wins
BEAR GRASS -- A three-run first inning helped Bear Grass beat Columbia 7-6 Tuesday in an Atlantic 7 Conference baseball game.
Brent Wynne singled and Brookes Walker reached on an error before Brandon Mobley doubled in both. Allen Mobley later reached on an error and eventually scored to give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Walker picked up the victory for the Bears (2-3, 1-0). He gave up six runs on eight hits, striking out 10 and walking seven.
Bear Grass hosts Cape Hatteras Thursday.

Panthers take conference opener
YEATESVILLE -- Cranking out 15 hits along the way, the Northside Panthers softball team opened Four Rivers Conference play with a 10-1 victory against Roanoke on Tuesday.
Sophomore Candice Hancock ripped three hits and drove in three runs for the Panthers (3-1, 1-0), including an RBI single in the team's three-run first. Myra Steppe and Roxanne Tankard had RBI singles in a four-run sixth.
Crystal Cooper picked up the win, limiting Roanoke to just five hits.

Vikings fall to Pirates
PLYMOUTH -- The Plymouth Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but just couldn't push across a run in a 1-0 loss to Perquimans in Tuesday's Four Rivers Conference softball opener.
Perquimans scored the lone run of the game in the third, coming on a bases-load walk. Plymouth (4-2, 0-1) had a chance to score in the bottom half when Frannie Pittman tripled, but she was left stranded there.
Ashley Saunders (4-2) suffered the loss. She fanned 11 and walked five.
Plymouth returns to action Friday by visiting Northside.

Tigers earn first victory
WILLIAMSTON -- Samantha Sheperd tossed a five-hitter and Williamston's softball team put together enough hits to beat Gates County 2-0 Tuesday in a Four Rivers Conference game.
Sheperd, a sophomore, struck out three and walked none in seven innings. It was the first victory of the season for the Tigers (1-3, 1-0).
Mary Drew scored Williamston's run in the second inning. She walked, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball. Virginia Webb scored in the fourth when she singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Davis, stole third and scored on Drew's single.
Williamston hosts Washington Thursday.

Pungo gets past Terra Ceia
Allison Phelps led the Pungo Raiders to a 13-6 win over Terra Ceia in softball action on Tuesday.
The pitcher gave up three hits and struck out nine to get the victory. She also batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored. She singled in the fifth and eventually scored along with two other runners after a Terra Ceia error on the same play.
Pungo scored seven times in the fifth on seven hits and a walk. The Raiders (3-1, 1-1) trailed 3-2 before scoring seven times in the fifth to take control. Phelps made sure the lead stood up, as the Raiders added three insurance runs in the seventh.
Terra Ceia (1-4, 0-3) returns to action on Friday at home against Bethel.

Pam Pack golfers take sixth
KINSTON -- Jeremy Smith fired a 78 for his lowest round of the season, helping Washington take sixth at an Eastern Carolina Conference golf match on Tuesday.
Sophomore Phillip Angarole also had his season-best, firing an 87 for 18 holes. Also scoring for Washington were Sam Leggett (95) and Erik Apple (95). Playing but not figuring in the scoring were Andrew Newman (101), Joey LaCompte (108) and Grayson Hodges (113).
Charles B. Aycock won the event with a 311 score. The Golden Falcons were followed by West Carteret (322), Kinston (325), Easter Wayne (330), Southern Wayne (33), Washington (355), West Craven (411) and South Central (417). West Carteret's Ryan Holler was the medalist with a 70.

Bracey sets school record
WILLIAMSTON -- Williamston's Latroya Bracey set a new school record during Williamston's home triangular meet on Tuesday.
Bracey established the new record in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 49.19 seconds. That also gave Bracey first place in the event. Bracey also won the triple jump with a leap of 29 feet, 5 3/4 inches.
Melanie Deans, Natalie Perez and Terri Hines helped lead Southside to the team victory, as the Seahawks finished with 60 points in a close race. Perquimans was second (58) and Williamston third (53).
Deans took first in the 800 (2:57), 1600 (6:21) and 3200 (13:52) meter runs. Perez earned first in the shot (33-1) and discus (87-2 1/4), while Hines placed first in the high jump (4-10), 400 dash (1:03.19) and 200 dash (27.23).
Williamston's Gerri-Lena White took top honors in the long jump (14-8), while the 400 meter relay team won in 52.9 seconds.
Also for the Tigers, Katy Bazemore was second in the 3200 (19:27) and 1600 (8:58), while Shonda Brinson was second in the 100 dash (12.02).
For Southside, Sharkeysha Midgette was second in the triple jump (28-7 3/4) and long jump (14-4).
Williamston plays host to Camden on Thursday.
