The Washington Pam Pack cruised to a 23-1 victory over Eastern Carolina Conference rival Goldsboro on Friday. However, first-year coach Marvin Burke said his team is still not giving its best effort.
Washington (3-5, 2-0) dominated the game from start to finish, as a young and inexperienced Cougar team struggled to get outs and generate offense.
The Pam Pack got just one run on one hit in the first thanks to an RBI sacrifice by pitcher Aaron Mobley following a stand-up triple by Carlos Guilford. Washington then exploded in the second and third innings, scoring seven and 11 runs, respectively.
Goldsboro did not help themselves, committing 11 errors in the second and third. Goldsboro used three pitchers, who walked a combined eight batters, while allowing 12 hits.
Washington blew the game wide open, taking an 8-0 lead in the second. John Brown led off the inning and reached on one of five Cougar errors. Two batters later, Josh Eddings knocked him home with a single to center. Eddings' hit became the first of four straight singles as Billy Moore, Matt Tanner and Cory Calloway followed suit.
Errors continued to plague Goldsboro, keeping the inning alive for Mobley, who hit a two-run single to right.
Mobley pitched a gem on the mound and had a perfect game going into the fourth. Mobley struck out 13 Cougars and gave up one run on two hits. Mobley led the Pack offensive attack, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Tanner, the catcher, was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Guilford was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
The Pack advantage grew to 19-0 in the third, as Washington scored 11 runs on just four hits thanks to six Cougar errors.
Goldsboro's lone run came in the fourth, as Robert Coates broke up the no-hitter with a single to right. Goldsboro got back-to-back hits, as Blake Elliot ripped a laser-beam single off the arm of a diving Jock Moore, Washington's first baseman. Moore had to leave the game. The run scored as a result of a Pam Pack error.
Washington added four more in the fourth, using mostly bench players, and the game ended after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.
