LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg College softball team took two games in action on Saturday.
Louisburg beat Greensboro College 3-0 behind the pitching of Cassie Spinholtz and Kristen Slade, a graduate of Northside High School. Spinholtz pitched the first five innings while Slade went the last two. Slade gave up one hit.
Louisburg also beat Southern Maryland 9-1 to improve its overall record to 14-3. Slade got the win, giving up a run on four hits, striking out seven and walking two in five innings. She also had two putouts and batted 0-for-1 with a sacrifice bunt that drove in a run.
Constance Williams, a Jamesville High School graduate, pitched the sixth inning, giving up a hit, striking out one and walking one. Kristian Williams, another Northside graduate, had three putouts and batted 0-for-1 in the contest.
Williams and Slade had two of the best earned runs average among National Junior College pitchers. Slade is 14th in the nation with a 1.01 ERA while Williams is 15th with a 1.10 ERA.
Louisburg is scheduled to face Southern Maryland today at noon in a doubleheader.
Benson gets second save
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Greg Mangum hit a two-run double and an RBI single as North Carolina beat Florida State 8-4 Saturday night to end the Seminoles' 30-game home conference win streak.
Florida State scored a run and loaded the bases in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but North Carolina closer Whitley Benson got FSU's Stephen Drew to fly out to the warning track in center field for his second save of the season.
Benson, a junior, played his high school ball at Plymouth.
Chad Prosser added three hits and two RBIs for the Tar Heels (19-8, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). Starting pitcher Daniel Moore (4-0) gave up two runs on seven hits in five innings of work for North Carolina.
North Carolina used a six-hit, five-run fourth inning that included Mangums single and a Prosser sacrifice fly to take a 5-0 lead.
Blake Balkcom hit a solo home run for Florida State (27-5, 5-3), the first of his career, in the sixth.
Florida State grounded into three double plays and left 15 runners on base. Matt Lynch (6-2) gave up 11 hits and five runs in five innings for the loss.
Demons drop 4-3 soccer decision
P.S. Jones dropped a 4-3 decision to Arapahoe in middle school soccer action on Thursday.
The Demons got two goals from Steven Woodward and another from Archie Griffin in the loss.
The Demons (7-2) host Broad Creek on Monday in the regular-season finale.
