District Attorney Seth Edwards of the 2nd Judicial District confirmed Monday that charges have been filed against a juvenile in connection with the July 9, 2002, death of Belhaven resident Travis Eugene McGhee.
The juvenile, who was identified only as the son of McGhee's girlfriend, made his first appearance in a Beaufort County courtroom Friday; he officially was charged at that time with manslaughter.
The body of McGhee, 54, of 112 W. Main St., Belhaven, was found in his home with a gunshot to the head after authorities were notified of the incident by the alleged shooter's mother, law enforcement officers reported at the time.
The juvenile and his mother reportedly left the area following the shooting and returned two days later to notify authorities.
The juvenile's mother provided information to authorities which she said would lead them to the recovery of the small caliber handgun allegedly used to kill McGhee, according to law enforcement officers. Two days after the shooting, members of the Sidney Dive Team searched Pantego Creek for the weapon, but it was not found in the area.
The juvenile's next court date is set for April 11, court records show.
