Mrs. Mae Hardison Alligood

Mrs. Mae (Arnold) Hardison Alligood, age 90, slipped gracefully into eternal rest on Tuesday January 9, 2007. She was a lifelong resident of Washington.
A graveside celebration of life will be held at the graveside in Oakdale Cemetery on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 2 p.m.
Mrs. Alligood was born in Creswell, NC on September 12, 1916, to John and Janie Furlough. Her mother died in 1917 during the flu epidemic and she was raised by the late Dave and Sarah Arnold. She was married on November 7, 1934 to Audrey Hardison who died on August 5th, 1966. On May 17, 1967, she married Leroy Hilton Alligood who also preceded her in death on July 18, 1992.
Mrs. Alligood was an avid homemaker and gardener. During her first marriage, she raised four beautiful children, all who still survive. She was a past president and a member of the Orr Lodge #104’s Order of the Eastern Star. As a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Washington, she dedicated over 50 years of service as a choir member and prelude organist. She shared her musical talents with Oden Funeral Home and Paul Funeral Home as an organist and singer for over 20 years. In her later years, she moved her church membership to the First Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, D. Thomas Hardison of Durham, NC, three daughters; Sister Jane Hardison of Manhasset, NY and currently of the home, Miriam Hardison Carter Phillips and husband Preston L. Phillips of Byron, GA, Teresa Hardison Smith and her husband Danny Ray Smith of Washington; a step-daughter, Anna Alligood Gray and her husband Dr. Frank Gray of Knoxville, TN; eight grandchildren, Thomas M. “Ty” Carter, Etta Carter Oliver, Daniel Lee Smith, Jacklyn Michelle Smith, Preston Lee Phillips, Jr., Elisa Lynn Phillps, David P. Gray and Piper Gray Rose; three great grandchildren, Joshua Thomas Carter, Victoria Oliver and Joey Oliver; a half brother, Wilbert Furlough and wife Joyce of Chesapeake, VA, and an aunt, Esther Ambrose of Creswell, NC.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Esther Sellers and Florence Furlough, and a step-daughter, Barbara Ann Alligood.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Danny Smith, 209 East Eleventh St. in Washington.
