Mr. Henry Garfield Phelps Sr., 85, of Creswell, died Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at Chowan Hospital, Edenton, surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 2, 1921 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Milton H. and Pearl Davenport Phelps and was preceded in death by his sister, Myrline P. Lamm; brothers, Cecil Phelps and Leroy Phelps. Mr. Phelps was a retired farmer and attended Philippi Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and elder for 32 years.
His family includes his wife of 65 years, Nancy Hassell Phelps of Creswell, N.C.; daughter, Lucy Rae Johnson and husband Harvey of Edenton, N.C.; sons, Milton Phelps and wife Anita of Creswell, N.C., Henry G. (Hank) Phelps, Jr. and wife Shelia of Brooksville, FL, Don Phelps and wife Debbie of Williamsburg, VA and Hal Phelps and wife Dale of Columbia, N.C.; sisters, Verna P. Herrington of Plymouth, N.C. and Norma P. Phelps of Lutherville, MD; brothers, Lester Phelps of South Haven, MS., Jesse Phelps of Augusta, GA, Waverly Phelps of Greenville, N.C. and Bobby Phelps of Creswell, N.C.; sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and many other loving family members.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Philippi Church of Christ, Creswell with Thomas Biggs, Larry Woodley and Glenn Brickhouse officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends on Friday, January 12, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
