Mr. Johnny Ray Wainwright, Sr., age 77, a resident of 1150 Sparrows Bay, Blounts Creek, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, January 15, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Smyrna Original Free Will Baptist Church of Blounts Creek officiated by Rev. Joel Cannon and Rev. David Linton. Burial will follow at Warren Memorial Cemetery. Greg Rowe, Guilford Lewis, Gerard Rowe, Mayhew Banks, Scott Fleming and Chris Fleming will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Johnny was born in Pitt County on March 12, 1929 son of the late Jesse Wainwright and the late Berdie Worthington Wainwright. He attended Pitt County and Beaufort County Schools. Mr. Johnny served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married the former Nancy Carol Blakley on July 2, 1955 who survives. Mr. Johnny was a foreman and machinist with the Newport News Shipyard until his retirement on April 1, 1991. He was a member of Smyrna Original Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving along with Mr. Johnny’s wife Nancy of the home is a daughter: Teresa K. Wainwright of Blounts Creek; a son: Johnny “Ray” Wainwright, Jr. of Blounts Creek; two sisters: Mary Elizabeth Fleming of Blounts Creek and Clydie Faye Kinnion of Blounts Creek; God given family members John and Joyce Zimmerman both of Newport News, VA, Roger and Joan Ledbetter of Pratville, AL and Debra Berry Smith of Warner Robbins, GA, who all gave Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Nancy five grandkids: John Jr. and Jennifer Zimmerman of Newport News, VA, Robin L. “Sugar Booger 1” Smith of Greenville, SC and Alison “Sugar Booger 2” Bearden of Elko, GA who gave Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Nancy two great grandkids: Ethan and Brady. Mr. Johnny was preceded in death by two sisters: Cybil W. Banks and Estelle W. Banks and three brothers: Earl Wainwright, Clarence Herbert Wainwright and Jack Wainwright.
The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 19, 2007 at Smyrna Original Free Will Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
