Hunter Johnson and Candice Sasnett both ripped down five rebounds to share for team-high honors in Meredith College’s 78-53 loss to Greensboro College in women’s college basketball action on Friday.
Sasnett, who started the game, finished with two points and five rebounds in 23 minutes. She hit one of her four shot attempts. Sasnett, a former standout at Northside High School, also had one blocked shot.
Johnson logged 14 points and finished with four points and five rebounds. She hit two of her three shot attempts. Johnson, a former standout at Pungo, also had one assist and one steal.
For the season, Sasnett is averaging 1.6 points and 2.3 rebounds a game. Johnson is averaging 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds a game.
Meredith (1-16) plays host to Bennett College on Tuesday.
Coffield leading Trojans
Elton Coffield is the leading scorer for the Mount Olive Trojans.
The former Williamston High School standout is averaging 17.0 points per game. The senior is hitting 50.7 percent of his field goal attempts, including 42.9 percent from 3-point range, and 73.6 percent of his free throws.
Coffield is also averaging 2.8 rebounds per game, which is third highest on the team. He is averaging 5.6 assists per game, which ranks fourth best.
Mount Olive (15-5) plays at St. Andrews on Thursday.
Wilson has played in 15 games
Daniel Wilson has seen action in 15 games for Longwood University this season.
The former Northside High School standout is averaging 1.4 points and 1.7 rebounds for the Lancers.
Longwood (8-17) plays host to Florida Atlantic on Tuesday.
Midgette still starting
Sharkeysha Midgette has started 21 games for the UNC-Pembroke Braves this season.
The former Southside High School standout is averaging 4.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Her rebound total ranks second best on the team.
Midgette is hitting 46.6 percent of her field goal attempts and 59.5 percent at the free throw line.
She had seven points and five rebounds in Saturday’s 52-45 win over Georgia Southern.
The Braves (10-12), who have won six straight, play host to Francis Marion on Wednesday.
Midgette soaring already
Travis Midgette placed in two events for UNC-Wilmington in the season-opening CNU Captain’s Invitational.
Midgette captured second place in the triple jump. He flew 46-4.25 feet to take runner-up.
He took third place in the high jump event for UNC-Wilmington. The former Southside High School standout cleared 6 feet, 2 inches.
After participating in the UNC-Chapel Hill Invitational over the weekend, the Seahawks will take part in the Carolina Classic on Friday.
Looking ahead
Anthony Williams (Williamston) and his Mount Olive Trojans opened the baseball season Saturday against Armstrong Atlantic State. The Trojans took a 10-3 win in the opener and fell 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. Williams, who played second base, went 1 for 4 in the opener and 0 for 1 in the second game. The Trojans play again Friday against Georgia College in Florence, S.C.
M.J. Williams (Mattamuskeet) and the Lees-McRae Bobcats opened the softball season last weekend in the Claflin University tournament. The Bobcats play Friday at Milligan College.
Meredith Knox (Washington) and her Anderson University Trojans softball team plays at USC-Upstate in the season-opener on Wednesday.
Francheska Pittman (Plymouth) and the N.C. Central Eagles open the softball season Saturday at home against Winston-Salem State University.
Co-captain Mika Gurganus (Williamston), Sarah Weaver (Williamston) and the Barton College Bulldogs open the softball season Sunday at N.C. Central.
Nicole Jordan (Jamesville) and the Pitt County Bulldogs open the softball season Sunday at Methodist College.
Aaron Mobley (Washington) and the Pitt County Bulldogs open the baseball season Feb. 14 at Lenoir Community College.
Kendal Sadler (Southside), Tara Stancil (Williamston) and Mary Drew (Williamston) Feb. 16 against Andrew College.
