Non-profit offers counseling, credit assistance, information

Many Beaufort County residents who think they can’t afford to buy a home, can, said Delores Cannon, a certified housing counselor with Southside Alliance for Neighborhood Empowerment in Aurora.
Southside Alliance is a nonprofit organization that works with people who “thought homeownership wasn’t possible for them,” Cannon said. “It’s really within their reach.”
This Saturday, Beaufort County residents can attend a free workshop provided by Southside Alliance for straightforward information and advice about all aspects of homeownership, including costs and credit history requirements, according to a press release.
Southside Alliance has partnerships with Southern Bank, Affiliated Mortgage and a local building company. Families can buy a house with “no down payment and have an affordable mortgage,” she said.
Cannon said most of her clients are concerned with their credit. Southside Alliance provides one-on-one counseling to solve any credit issues. “We hold their hand and walk them through the process so that when they sit down and talk to the lender, they won’t be turned down,” she said.
Clients can build homes or purchase homes anywhere in Beaufort County.
According to Cannon, now is the best to buy a home because interest rates are low.
The workshop will be at the Old Aurora High School in the cafeteria Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Two representatives from Southern Bank and one representative from Affiliated Mortgage will be on hand. A box lunch will be provided. To register or for more information, call 322-3902.
