Mr. Donnie Herman Bell, Sr., 90, of 103 North End Drive, Chocowinity, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at his residence.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 16, 2007 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with Rev. Faye Rouse and Rev. Ed Drew officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Members of the Redmen Lodge, Tau Tribe # 18 will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at the home.
Mr. Bell was born May 18, 1916 in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late Donnie Leon Bell and Jessie Gordon Dixon Bell. He was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway and as Maintenance Supervisor for the City of Washington, working 23 years in each position. He was married to Elizabeth Hales, who preceded him in death on July 16, 1978. He later married Verda Moore Woolard, who preceded him in death on October 21, 2002. He was a member of the Redmen Lodge, Tau Tribe #18. Mr. Bell loved gardening.
Survivors include his son, Donnie Herman Bell, Jr. of Chocowinity; his step-daughter, Sylvia Wall of Chesterfield, VA; three sisters, Beulah Rhodes of Elizabeth City, Roxie Edwards of Chocowinity and Ann Beacham of Chocowinity; one brother, David Leon Bell of Hatfield, Mass.; two grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Bell and Verda Amanda Bell, both of Chocowinity; three great-grandchildren, Alexis Olivia Grace Jones, Donnie Lance Bell and John Christopher Bell and very special family friend, Shirley Crawford.
Mr. Bell was also preceded in death by four sisters, Magdalene B. Brinn, Ruby B. Edwards, Mary Evelyn Bell and Geraldine B. Williams; two brothers, Roosevelt Bell and Haywood Bell and his daughter-in-law, Olivia Irene Bell.
