Mrs. Catherine Moore Harris, 84, a resident of Britthaven of Washington, N.C., died Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Britthaven of Washington.
A funeral service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, 772 Over The Swamp Road, Blounts Creek, N.C.
Catherine Moore Harris was born on January 22, 1923, the daughter of the late John Grimes and Minnie Bell Moore in Blounts Creek, N.C. After her parents death at an early age, Catherine was raised by her Aunt Caroline Moore in the Bonnerton Community. At an early age she became a member of Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Blounts Creek. While in Bonnerton, she met and married her first husband, Jeremiah Moore, who preceded her in death in 1988 after 46 years of marriage. She attended P.S. Jones High School in Washington, N.C. and Beaufort Technical College (now Beaufort County Community College), Washington, N.C. Upon marriage and completing her education, Catherine moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she worked at Long Island College Hospital until her return to North Carolina in the late ‘60s. After returning to North Carolina, she worked as lunchroom manager at S.W. Snowden Elementary School, Aurora, N.C., and then at Martin County Community Action, Inc. in Washington, N.C. until she retired in 1980.
In 1992, she married Chauncey Harris and resided in Blounts Creek, N.C. until his passing in 1996. Whereupon Mrs. Harris moved to Mallard Creek Retirement Community, Aurora, N.C. where she resided as long as her health permitted.
Catherine was very active in her community as a Mother of Triumph Missionary Baptist Church, Blounts Creek, N.C. and as a usher at St. Matthew Free Will Baptist Church, Bonnerton, N.C. She was a member of Jeptha Chapter #1 OES, Washington, N.C., and Past Worthy Matron of Unity #566 OES, Bonnerton, N.C. She was a member of Busy Bee Senior Citizen Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Gospel Chorus, Beaufort County Mental Health Board, NAACP and Foster Parent of 42 children.
Catherine leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Clarence C. Moore, Sr. and wife Addie and Johnny T. Moore, Sr. both of Blounts Creek, N.C.; two daughters, Corrina B. Moore, Amagansett, N.Y. and Yulonda Moore Hayes of Aurora, N.C.; one brother, Rudolph Moore, Philadelphia, Pa.; special foster children, Herbert, Marshall and Teresa Pritchard; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by two sons, James A. Moore and Jerry Moore and two brothers, James K. Moore and Englewood Felton.
The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Yulonda M. Hayes, 507 South 7th Street, Aurora, N.C.
