They came 20 miles to help heal a community.
That was one of the goals of the “Walking for Souls” event sponsored Saturday by St. John Church of Christ. The church, which is located north of the Old Ford community, took its ministry to the streets around Beebe Park on Bridge Street near West 11th Street.
The project was a success, said Russell Wilkins, who has been the minister of the church for the past 30 years.
The event started at 8 a.m. Church members branched out to seven streets surrounding the park with fliers to let the community know its members were welcome. The church in turn provided free food and fellowship in a neighborhood that has made headlines in recent weeks for crime.
