LTC (Ret) Edwin Richard Griffith, PhD, 76, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007.
The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1776 North Market Street, Washington, NC. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Colonel Griffith, a native of San Antonio, Texas, was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and attended Duke University for a year prior to entering the United States Army. He served in the Infantry in Korea and later in the Special Forces with three tours in Vietnam and one tour in Laos, retiring in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from N.C. State University, both his Master’s and PhD Degrees from Southern Illinois University. He taught Political Science at Southern Illinois University and at East Carolina University. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Washington, NC where he sang in the choir.
He is survived by his: daughters, Diane M. Sykes of Lantana, FL, Deborah A. McGuirt of Atlanta, GA, and Sandra M. Callahan of Amherst, VA; grandchildren, Jessica M. Desrosiers, and Jennifer I. Livingston; great-grandchild, Deseree Desrosiers; sister, Shirley G. Ball of New Bern, NC.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville on Thursday from 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Choir Fund, P.O. Box 2505, Washington, NC 27889 or to the American Red Cross, Pitt County Chapter, Aid to Military Families, 601 F Country Club Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.
