Camille B. Clarke, 93, of South Elm Street, Greenville, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at her home after a lengthy illness.
Born at Wynn’s Folley in Hyde County on September 1, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Seth Gibbs and Laura Tankard Clarke. She graduated from Lake Landing High School in 1930, graduated from the former East Carolina Teacher’s College in 1934 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She later taught in the public schools in Scotland Neck and in Engelhard. After receiving her Master’s Degree from East Carolina Teacher’s College, she became dietitian for the college about 1950 and served in that capacity for many years.
Miss Clarke was awarded the “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” in 1983 at the request of Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. She served commendably as a Regional Dietary Consultant in the Eastern Regional Office, Division of Health Services, N. C. Department of Human Resources, for ten years and culminating 43 years of state government and academic experiences. She held positions as instructor and dietitian at East Carolina University and Vocational Home Economics teacher in Northampton and Hyde County Schools.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the family plot in St. George’s Episcopal Church Cemetery at Lake Landing. The Reverend Robert Hobgood, Episcopal priest of Greenville will officiate.
Surviving are six nieces and nephews, E. Royden Clarke, Jr. and Louis W. Clarke both of Engelhard, Florence Swindell Mitchell, Camille Swindell Arrington, Charles A. Swindell and James E. Swindell all of Raleigh.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Royden Clarke, Sr. and a sister, Florence Clarke Swindell.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to St. George’s Episcopal Church, c/o Claire M. Spencer, P. O. Box 101, Engelhard, N.C,. 27824 and they extend special thanks to Dot Grimm, Rose Ann Finelle, Wanda Corey and Nora Thibodeau for their special care provided Miss Clarke during her illness.
The family will receive friends after the funeral service at the home of Roy and Anna Clarke, 29954 U. S. Highway 264, Lake Landing.
