Yvonne Alexander Phelps, 58, of 103 Villa Drive, Elizabeth City, N.C., died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at her residence. Yvonne, also known to many as “GeeGee” was born in Washington County on July 20, 1948. She was a professional hair stylist for over 38 years and was a business entrepreneur of multiple hair design businesses until her illness forced her to retire. Yvonne was very active in her community and church. She loved music and participated in her church choir and local musical plays. Yvonne’s greatest gift was her way of bringing joy and laughter to others. She was a loving and giving person especially to her daughter, grandsons and family.
Yvonne leaves behind a grieving and heartbroken family: her daughter, Yvette Phelps Underwood and significant other Toby Fish; three grandsons, Johnathan Underwood (of the home), Ryan Underwood and Alec Fish; her mother and father Dolores Holton Alexander and Victor St.Clair Alexander, II of Creswell, N.C.; a sister, Katherine Alexander Walden and husband Stuart of Bath, N.C.; a brother, Victor St.Clair Alexander III of Boca Raton, FL; two nephews, Shea Harris and wife Cherry Harris and Jayme Harris and wife Emily Harris; and a great nephew, Parker Harris. Yvonne was preceded in death by a sister, Jill Holton Alexander, and a grandmother, Alice “Allie” Hatfield. Yvonne also leaves behind so many beautiful and wonderful friends, all of who loved her and have been by her side. Her friends have shown so much support to her family. Yvonne was such a generous, kind and caring person, who took care of those around her, gave whatever was necessary to whoever was in need. Her joy in life was to be surrounded by family, friends and children.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Frese officiating. Immediately following the funeral service, a reception will be held in the Asbury Room of the church. A graveside service will be held at the Mount Hermon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Creswell, N.C., at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday evening from 7 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O.
