Text messages containing “language we need to get to the bottom of” caused panic in Hyde County schools Thursday, Sheriff David Mason said.
Rumors of bomb threats and shootings sent panicked parents to Mattamuskeet schools’ shared campus in Swan Quarter on Thursday morning.
Superintendent Gregory Todd said a telephone call from a parent on Tuesday alerted him to the text messages. Neither he nor Mason would discuss the messages’ contents, which were sent to students’ cell phones.
No attempt was made to alert students or teachers to any possible danger, Todd said.
The State Bureau of Investigation has joined the sheriff’s office and the school system in the text-message probe.
Neither Mason nor Todd would release identities of any students who could be suspects. Mason said there was no suspect in custody as of Thursday night. The investigation is ongoing, he said.
