Ivan Bruce Griffin

Mr. Ivan Bruce Griffin, 80, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday May 6, 2007 at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven, NC. Prior to his hospitalization, he was residing in the comfort of his daughter Michelle Morris’ home, at 1540 C Canal Road in Pantego, NC. He was born November 18, 1926 in Park View Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC to Henry Daniel and Nina Lee Jones Griffin, who preceded him in death.
He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1944 and joined the Navy to serve in WWII. After leaving the Navy with an honorable discharge, he was employed with VEPCO and then transferred to Virginia Natural Gas, where he retired after 30 years of service as a service technician. Bruce was a member of the Newport News Moose Lodge since 1965 and was also a member of the American Legion Post 25 of Newport News, VA. He loved hunting, fishing, and cooking and his grandchildren. He was a great cook and had helped to cook numerous meals at the Moose Lodge, American Legion and Virginia Natural Gas. No one could make BBQ or brunswick stew like Bruce. He loved his friends, family, and always had a funny joke to tell.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his long-time companion of 21 years, Pauline Hall, his brothers: J.T., Henry Lee, Russell, and W.F. Griffin and also his sisters: Mamie G. Reid and Hattie Grace Edwards.
Bruce leaves to cherish his memory his children, Michelle (Shelly) Morris and her children: Meghan, Logan and Gracie Morris. Also his son and daughter, Donna Wilkins and Michael Griffin, numerous nieces and nephews, many friends and his caring and beloved sister, Elizabeth Reges of Red Oak, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday May 9, 2007 at Union Grove Church of Christ in Pungo at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 10th at Red Oak Baptist Church, 5515 Red Oak Road, Red Oak, NC 27868 at 1 p.m. with interment to follow at Red Oak Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bruce’s name to American Cancer Society, Easter Seals Foundation, Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters or St. Jude Hospital.
