Mary Lou Woolard and others make a living selling real estate.
She also knows there comes a time to give back.
Saturday was one of those times.
Woolard and Coldwell Banker Coastal Rivers Realty marshaled a small army of volunteers and contractors to fix up a home off Dan Taylor Road north of Washington. The owner, a widow in her 60s, works two jobs, but still couldn’t keep pace with upkeep. She and her late husband bought the double wide in the 1970s and she used most of their savings when he was ill.
Realtors and others rolled up their sleeves to help. Some cut the grass, which was thigh high. Others repaired screens or painted inside. Licensed contractors also are lending a hand replacing the floor and providing new floor covering. The process started on Thursday and should end on Wednesday.
The trailer had running water, but the kitchen faucet wouldn’t work. That’s been fixed. So has the insulation in the wall.
Those who didn’t roll up their sleeves opened their wallets.
She raised $1,700 toward supplies, but figures she’ll still be several hundred dollars short.
Last year, Woolard struck out on her own to fix up a home off Horse Pen Swamp Road. In that case, she got the exterior paint donated for free. The adage ‘you get what you pay for’ applies.
