Mr. William James Gibbs Sr., 86, of 127 Rhodes Drive, Columbia, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Chowan Hospital.
A military graveside service was conducted by the Rev. Joe Wynns.
Mr. Gibbs was born in Tyrrell County at Gum Neck in August 1920 to George Avery Gibbs and Verna Mae Gibbs. He was a veteran of World War II where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was also a member of the VFW and honorably retired from the Civil Service at Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Va.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Selby Gibbs; one daughter, Karen James of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sons, William J. Gibbs Jr. and Barry Gibbs, both of Columbia and Nick Gibbs of Dover, Del.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steve Gibbs; a granddaughter, four sisters and three brothers.
