Mrs. Ann Kimbrough Weber Mathis, age 80, and a resident of 721 West Main Street, Washington, N.C., died Saturday evening, May 26, 2007, after a brief illness.
Mrs. Mathis was born in Shreveport, LA. on April 20, 1927, the daughter of the late George and Norma Weber. She was a graduate of Fontbonne College in Saint Louis, Missouri, where she met and married Dr. James L. Mathis on June 2, 1948. Together they started a family and built his medical practice in Elk City, Oklahoma, and later in Dayton, Tennessee. After several moves with children in tow, she and her husband settled in Eastern North Carolina. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Washington, North Carolina, which she dearly loved and quickly called home.
Her pleasures were cooking, weaving, genealogy, and her many friends and family. She was a full-time parent who managed the raising of her children and husband, as well as many other enterprises including the University of Oklahoma’s Medical School Faculty Club, a rock quarry, catering business, and the Grimesland General Store. She was indeed a woman of many talents.
She is survived by her son Jeff Mathis and his wife Diane of Grimesland, N.C.; daughter Leslie Mathis Gray and her husband Bob of Washington; daughters Linda Blakeley of Belhaven, N.C., Lynn Mathis of Hertford, N.C. Robin Harris of Hertford, and Karen Mathis of Greenville. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that extend from Eastern North Carolina to San Diego, CA, all of which were proud to call her Nana. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Dr. James L. Mathis and her son Mark A. Mathis of Raleigh.
A service is planned in the Brown Chapel of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Washington, N.C. on Sunday, June 3, 2007, at 2 p.m.
