Event draws more than 30 survivors

The Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center hosted its inaugural Survivors’ Day on Sunday.
Over 30 area cancer survivors attended the event, which was also attended by survivors’ family members and caregivers. National Cancer Survivors Day, which is held each year in many communities around the world on the first Sunday in June, is a symbolic event to demonstrate that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality, according to a news release issued by Beaufort County Hospital.
Dr. Gene Eakes, a retired professor of nursing from East Carolina University, provided an inspirational talk that combined wisdom and humor in a message of life lessons for everyone, according to the release. The cancer survivors who attended the event had the opportunity to meet and get to know other cancer survivors and gather educational information about surviving cancer.
The cancer center, a division of Beaufort County Hospital, provides medical services in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders. The center provides high-quality, comprehensive cancer treatment along with compassionate care to the residents of Beaufort County and surrounding counties, according to the release. The center offers chemotherapy treatment, radiation assessments, blood and platelet transfusions, hormone therapy, patient and family education as well as several support services to help its patients and caregivers cope with the impact of cancer on their lives.
