Damien Wilkins is looking forward to coming home, but he’s not going to be able to relax a whole lot.
Wilkins, a standout basketball player with the Seattle SuperSonics, will return home for his annual “Fun Day” celebration — this year marks the third community get-together.
Preceding this year’s festivities, Wilkins will hold a basketball camp June 19-22 at Washington High School. Wilkins said some 100 students from the middle schools, high school and Boys &Girls Club will participate in this year’s camp.
Adidas, with whom Wilkins recently signed a contract, is sponsoring this year’s camp.
There will be two sessions per day. The younger students will participate in the camp from 9 a.m. to noon, while the older students will go at it from 2 to 5 p.m.
Wilkins plans on teaching basic fundamentals, while also having a little fun with the campers.
Wilkins, who said he hopes to have a celebrity-type basketball game on June 22, will be looking to teach more than just basketball.
There will also be plenty of prizes awarded during “Fun Day.” Vitamin Water will be donating 500 bottles of water, EA Sports is donating PlayStation games, Apple is offering 100 iTune gift cards and Interscope Records is giving away recordings by Tupac and Pharrell Williams.
Meanwhile, Wilkins will be presenting three rather-generous gift cards to WalMart.
Along with the usual rides and games for the kids, Wilkins is looking to add a couple activities for the adults, including Bingo and a sack race.
Wilkins is excited that each passing “Fun Day” draws more and more interest from the community.
Despite the hard work and long hours, Wilkins is anxious to return home.
