Martha Phelps Jordan

Mrs. Martha Perry Phelps Jordan, 82, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, of Plymouth, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at her residence.
Born August 28, 1924 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Edward A. and Helen Megna Perry. She was preceded in death by her second husband, J. Bryant Jordan with whom she shared many years of Christian happiness and joy. Also preceding her were grandchildren, Christy Jett, Rodney Spruill and daughter-in-law, Barbara S. Phelps.
Mrs. Jordan retired from the Plymouth Post Office, where she will always be remembered as “the lady with the warm smile and pleasant greeting.” She gave tirelessly of herself through her many hobbies, including volunteer craft instructor, knitting, cooking and working with multiple volunteer organizations. She received numerous Governor’s Awards as well as state and county awards for her many hours of working to help others. Among her many volunteer organizations was the Washington County Hospital Hospitality Shop, Meals On Wheels, Roanoke Home Care Hospice and the Plymouth Food Pantry. She was an active member of the Plymouth Lioness Club for many years. She was a member of First Christian Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She served as a deaconess, a Sunday School teacher for 42 years and a dedicated member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
Her family includes her daughters, Shirley Jett and husband Clyde and Doris Morris and husband Lee of Plymouth; sons, Harrell Phelps and wife Betsy of Conway and Edward Phelps of Plymouth; first husband, Milton Harrell Phelps of Creswell; grandchildren, Luther and Laura Jett, Eddie and Leslie Morris, Jimmy Morris, Debbie and Kenny Mizelle and Jennifer Spruill; six great grandchildren and many other loving family members.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, July 1, 2007 at 3 p.m. in the First Christian Church with Rev. V. Tom Banks officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the residence. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to First Christian Church Handicapped Fund. Arrangements are by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
