The semifinal game of the 13-U Junior Babe Ruth League District Six Tournament between Washington and New Bern that was originally scheduled for Tuesday should finally be settled today.
The game was postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday night due to rain, and was again postponed last night with Washington holding a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning. Play will resume at the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex today at 5:30 p.m., with New Bern at-bat and runners on first and third with two outs.
Things didn’t start well for Washington Wednesday night, as New Bern scored three runs in the top of the second to build a 3-0 lead over the host team. The three runs scored by New Bern were keyed by a bunt single from second baseman Michael Krantz. Krantz’ single loaded the bases, and all three runners on base, including Krantz, later scored.
A fine defensive play by Washington centerfielder Johnny Broadway turned the momentum in Washington’s favor. New Bern’s Nick Livolsi singled up the middle with two out and a runner on second in the top of the third and it looked like New Bern would extend its lead, but Broadway fielded the ball and came up firing, throwing out a New Bern runner at home plate and giving Washington a spark.
Broadway’s heroics ended the inning, and Washington responded by scoring six runs in the bottom half of the inning to gain a 6-3 lead.
Washington received singles from Cameron Warren, Forrest Hawkins and Ryan Hardison in succession, one of which Broadway scored on, to ignite the six-run inning.
The winner of the Washington-New Bern semifinal game will play Kinston in the championship game approximately thirty minutes after the postponed game is finished
