The Southside Seahawks’ football team will look to carry on its strong tradition of success without its long time head coach DeWayne Kellum this season, after the coach handed in his resignation on Tuesday.
Kellum could not be reached for comment, but Southside athletic director Larry Knox said the coach’s resignation came as a shock.
Kellum will remain a member of the Southside faculty, though he will no longer have any football responsibilities.
Knox said he did not immediately talk to Kellum about the reasoning behind his resignation, but has since discussed the move.
Kellum has been the Seahawks’ head coach since 1999, and has led his squad to two appearances in the NCHSAA 1-A state championship game.
The Southside coach is known for being passionate about football, and dropped no hints of retiring last season.
Kellum handed in his resignation on Tuesday, the first day of Seahawks’ mini-camp. The timing of his departure begs the question of whether or not their was bad blood between himself and the administration.
Knox would not discuss the specifics of Kellum’s resignation, while Kellum could not be reached to discuss the matter.
Knox did say that there has not been any other departures as of Wednesday.
Knox said that Southside is currently conducting a search for a new skipper. The Southside athletic director said he is looking at assistants as well as outside candidates to fill the void.
