Mrs. Elizabeth Pearl Blount Whitaker, 96, of 597 W. Pantego St., Belhaven, died Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Mary’s Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Swan Quarter, with Vice-Bishop Charles Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Swan Quarter.
Mrs. Whitaker was born in Hyde County on Oct. 21, 1910. She was the daughter of the late David and Annie Whitfield Blount. She was a 1931 graduate of Beaufort County High School, Pantego. In 1948, she earned a bachelor of science degree from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City. On June 2, 1941, she married Jesse Roosevelt Whitaker, who preceded her in death Oct. 8, 2001. In 1972, she retired after 39 years as a teacher with the Hyde County Schools System. She was a member of the N.C. Retired School Personnel, AARP Chapter No. 125, Washington, and program committee. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Swan Quarter, where she served as secretary of the union meeting and the Sunday school convention in Hyde County, treasurer of the youth department in Beaufort County and vice president of MDT (WNDA, Inc.).
She was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Betty Johnson, 20029 U.S. Highway 264 East, Swan Quarter.
Arrangements are by Randolph Funeral Home, 219 N. Bonner St., Washington.
