As one of Washington All-Star team’s season was coming to an end on Thursday, another one was preparing for its state tournament.
The 13-U Washington team was eliminated from the Junior Babe Ruth District Six Tournament in a 12-6 loss to New Bern at the Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex Thursday.
Meanwhile, the 15-U Washington team was taking batting practice at the complex after returning from Bayboro, where it won its district tournament.
The win by the Washington 15-U team was the team’s first district championship in seven years.
Washington capped a perfect 4-0 record by beating Newport 7-4 in the 15-U championship game earlier this week. Thomas was the winning pitcher in the championship game, while teammate David Tyson picked up the save.
Tyson recorded a total of 16 strikeouts in the tournament.
Tyson also helped Washington offensively in the championship game, as he went 2-for-4 and led the team with three RBIs.
Also in the championship game, Gator Moore drove in two runs and leadoff hitter Jamie Landen went 2-4.
As for the 13-U team, Washington had a 6-5 lead going into the seventh and final inning on Thursday, but New Bern rallied for seven runs in the inning to eliminate the host team.
New Bern recorded five hits and had eight batters in a row reach base safely in the seven-run inning.
Ryan Miller of New Bern went 3-for-4 at the plate, and pitched a complete game in the game. Miller’s bases clearing, 3-RBI double in the seventh inning sealed the victory for New Bern.
New Bern didn’t have the same type of success against undefeated Kinston/Lenoir in the 13-U championship game however, as Kinston/Lenoir won the championship game 8-3.
Kinston/Lenoir will now represent District six in next week’s 13-U Babe Ruth State Tournament held in Farmville, and Washington will represent District six in the Babe Ruth State Tournament held in Havelock.
