In the early dawn of Saturday, August 11, 2007 a messenger came to tell Mary B. Brigman her journey on this earth was complete.
Mary was born to the late Shelley M. and Josephine Ross Bennett in Aurora, NC on August 28, 1936. She was preceded in death by her baby brother, William Brian Bennett.
She is survived by her husband of fifty years John Thomas (Toady) Brigman, Sr. of the home; one son, John T. Brigman, Jr. and wife Denise of Hamlet; two daughters, Jo B. Pocock and husband Dale of Charlotte and Tammy L. Brigman of Rockingham; a granddaughter, Shellie N. Brigman of Hamlet; a grandson John T. Brigman, III and an adopted granddaughter Kimberly Brown of Hamlet as well as her special pets; a special brother and sister-in-law Bob &Golda Brigman of Hamlet and a special friend Shirley McDuffie.
Mary, a member of Marston Baptist Church, tried to live her life according to Colossians 1:10. Church and missions played a strong role in Mary’s life as she served her church as a Sunday school teacher, WMU director and a leader of a mission group. Mary was also active with the Pee Dee Baptist Association serving as Assistant Director for the WMU and as a consultant for the Pee Dee Baptist Nursing Fellowship. She also served the NC Baptist Nursing Fellowship as program chairperson. Mary was one of three nurses chosen to implement the State of Pennsylvania’s Baptist Nursing Fellowship.
A graduate of Aurora High School and the Hamlet Hospital School of Nursing, Mary received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from UNC-Chapel Hill as a member of the National Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau. She retired from nursing after serving 43 years from Richmond Memorial Hospital and the Richmond County Health Department. During her tenure in public health, Mary served as the regional chairperson for the NC Public Health Nurse Administrators as well as serving on the North Carolina Public Health Nurse Administrator’s Council. She was also a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association serving as President of the local council.
Mary served her community as a member of the Woman’s Club of Hamlet where she held several offices including President of the local and regional chapter as well as chairing numerous departments. She served as a member of the Richmond County Board of Health.
She and her family would like to send a special thank you to their family, neighbors and friends for the prayers and kindness shown during her illness.
There will be a celebration of her life on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at First Baptist Church, Hamlet, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at Harrington Funeral Home on Monday, August 13, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
