Mrs. Vivian Cutler Weatherly, 93, died August 13, 2007. Her Memory will be cherished for her significant contributions of music and education. Mrs. Weatherly was organist for First Christian Church from 1937 until 1993 and at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church from 1993 through 2003. She taught piano, guitar, organ lessons and public school music.
Mrs. Weatherly was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Alton Thomas Weatherly, and her sisters: Doris Toler, Evelynne Morris and Callorie Owens. She is survived by her five children and their spouses: Dr. William J. Weatherly and wife Margaret of Greensboro, David H. Weatherly and wife Lynn of Washington, Gaynelle W. Mills and husband Fred of Robersonville, Phyllis Weatherly-Rosner and husband Sanford Rosner of Winston Salem and Paula Ruth Tisdale and husband Kenneth of Washington; ten grandchildren: Nancy Bromhal, William J. Weatherly, Jr., Mary Lindsay Weatherly, Stephanie Ellis, Fred Albert Mills, Eva Weatherly-Rosner, Deborah “Dee Dee” Weatherly-Rosner, Alton Tisdale, Tracy L. Mayo and Jason Scott Woolard; ten great-grandchildren: Mary Margaret Bromhal, Katherine Newsom Bromhal, Anna Lane Mayo, William Patrick Mayo III, Sarah Scott Woolard, Lilly Claire Woolard, Henry Stewart Woolard, Amber Ellis, Braxton Ellis and Justin Mills. She is also survived by her twin sister: Velma Englehardt.
Mrs. Weatherly earned a degree in music from Brenau College, Gainesville, Georgia and a masters degree in education from East Carolina University. She began her teaching career in Pactolus, then in the late 1930s taught 5th grade in Bath. In the late ’50s she taught music at Chocowinity where she produced annual operettas and directed quartets. Mrs. Weatherly taught public school music at Chicod School in Pitt County from 1962 until she retired.
Mrs. Weatherly was active in Christian Women’s Fellowship, North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, National Education Association, North Carolina Association of Educators, North Carolina Retired Governmental Employees Association and North Carolina Retired School Personnel. She actively participated in Beaufort County Community Concerts Organization, enjoyed playing clarinet with the Washington Community Band, sang in the Washington Choral Society and took painting and doll making classes through Beaufort County Community College.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Washington. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. also at the church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church, 401 East 2nd Street, Washington, NC 27889.
