Heading into his second season with Williamston, head coach Asim McGill has something this year that he didn’t have last season, depth.
At this time last year McGill and the Tigers headed into their first game of the season with a little over 20 players. This season Williamston boasts nearly 50 athletes when factoring in its junior varsity team.
McGill said having more players this season is a great luxury.
McGill got a good look at his team at work on Saturday as Williamston hosted a jamboree that featured South Lenoir, Currituck and Greenville Central. The Tigers’ skipper said he was pleased with what he saw.
After a 4-8 record last season, McGill said he would like to see his team step up this season and feels the defense will anchor the team.
Leading the Tigers’ defense will be a pair of twins at inside linebacker.
McGill said the Williamston will use a 4-3 as its base defense.
On offense, the Tigers will use a multiple-I offense.
Guiding the Tigers’ offense will be second year starting quarterback Jarrett Coffield. The signal caller showed flashes of potential last year, and McGill hopes he will continue to improve.
Coffield and the Tigers’ offense will have some difficulty replaces the points scored by WDN first-team running back Jamel Moore who graduated last year. McGill said to make up for his loss he will have to rely on several players.
McGill said he will also count heavily on running back Emery Griggs to help shoulder the load.
McGill said the key to the season will be for the team to improve every week.
The Tigers will look to make the 0-0 record 1-0 as they host Northeastern on Friday.
