Looking to build on its 10-3 record a year ago, the Vikings head into this season with plenty of returning players and some high expectations.
Back in the backfield for Plymouth is reigning WDN All-Area Player of the Year running back Andre Mitchell, along with his sturdy sidekick Tobias Claggon.
However the scariest aspect to Plymouth’s offense may be the fact that it is bringing back a majority of its offensive lineman from last season, including WDN first team lineman William Hunt.
One big piece missing from the Plymouth puzzle is quarterback Elvin James who graduated last season. James was a heady quarterback who kept his cool under pressure and could throw when need be.
This year the Vikings will line up with former running back Dasheen Perry at center. Last year Perry was a nimble runner, but until Perry slings the rock in a game, his throwing ability will be under question.
While Plymouth doesn’t throw the ball too much, when it does the Vikings will look to senior Angelo Sharpless. The senior wideout has tremendous athletic ability along with soft hands. The speedy receiver can create a lot of problems for defenses after the catch.
With one of the top offensive lines in the area, coupled with supreme talent at the skill positions, Plymouth will likely look to just run over teams as opposed to throwing over them.
After a stellar 2006 campaign, it will be exciting to see what Mitchell will do in 2007. Cody said he just wants his star back to go out and play ball.
While the Vikings are stacked on offense, their defense isn’t too shabby either.
Plymouth will use a 3-3 stack defense that features some strong linebackers.
The Vikings biggest question mark may be on the defensive line.
Finding some new people shouldn’t be too hard for Cody, the coach said he this year he had a tremendous turnout for the football season.
While the Plymouth coach knows the team and fans have high expectations this season, Cody said the key is to take it one game at a time and avoid injuries.
The Vikings first step will come this Friday when they travel to Farmville Central.
