Mr. Jarl Ellis Bowers, 89, of 108 Washington Harbor Drive, died Saturday August 18, 2007 at his home.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church conducted by the Reverend Kevin Johnson. Frank Johnston, Jimmy Johnston, Tomp Litchfield Jr., Bill Litchfield, Charlie Bowers, Fred Scales, Lex Mann and Ralph Hodges III will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Bowers was born in Washington on February 24, 1918, son of the late B. Frank Bowers and Lucy Tayloe Bowers. He attended Washington schools, The Citadel in Charleston, SC and the University of Maryland. On March 3, 1951 he married the former Grey Worley who preceded him in death. Mr. Bowers was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Tayloe Bowers and a sister, Lucy Bowers Johnston. Mr. Bowers is survived by a sister, Francis Bowers Litchfield of Washington: one niece, Tennys Bowers Owens; five nephews, Charlie Tayloe Bowers, James Marion Johnston Jr., Franklin Bowers Johnston, Thompson D. Litchfield Jr. and William Franklin Litchfield.
Mr. Bowers was commissioned in the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska and Europe in the Battle of the Bulge where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. For many years, he was engaged in the insurance business and dealt in stocks and bonds. He was a former board member of Seaboard Savings and Loan now Cooperative Savings and Loan, a member of the Washington Yacht and Country Club, the Committee of 100 and was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where he had served on the Vestry and as treasurer of the All Soul’s Fund for over 50 years.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the All Soul’s Fund, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
