Washington High School presented a balanced offense, with goals from five different players in a 6-0 soccer win over Northside Monday evening in Washington.
The Pam Pack jumped ahead early with a penalty kick from Thomas Alligood against Northside goalie Mario Covarrubias, a sophomore.
Sophomores and freshmen make up 11 of the 14 players on the Panther roster. Two of the Panther players are female, a requirement because soccer at the 1A level is co-ed.
Washington on the other hand has 20 juniors and seniors on a roster of 23, all of them male. Washington is a 3-A school and fields a separate girls team in the spring.
Northside hasn’t fielded a soccer team in at least three years. Coach Billy Bunn’s squad was seeing its first action of the year Monday. Washington (2-0) defeated Northeastern in its season opener at home last week.
Two players scored all three of Washington’s goals last week.
Washington had the depth and several times during the evening Kozuch pulled out the entire team and replaced them with fresh players. Bunn never had that luxury, but regularly put in one of the four players on his bench to give some relief.
After Washington’s opening goal, Chris Banks made an unbelievable kick from mid-field that made it into the net with 27 minutes left in the half. Archie Griffin then scored on a feed from Ryan Beddard about five minutes later. Carlos Perez capped the scoring with a header late in the half.
Perez provided two of the three goals for Washington last week, and Griffin the other.
In the second period, Zack Ware scored with 16 minutes left with an assist from Daniel Sawyer.
Fans might have missed the final goal. Storm clouds gathered and heavy rain fell, leaving the stands empty as play continued. Griffin notched his second goal of the evening on a header shot.
The game was finally called with just over five minutes left.
Washington will play again next Wednesday on the road against Northeastern.
