Event caters to children, families

The smell of barbecue and burgers on the grill drew a crowd to Community Family Fun Day on Saturday afternoon. But event organizers wanted people at Beebe Memorial Park to leave with more than just full stomachs.
To that end, a group of 10 “regular people” got together to revive what had been a tradition at the park at the corner of Bridge and 11th streets, said committee member Darryl Leathers.
And there was plenty going on Saturday.
As music boomed from large speakers on a makeshift stage, children gathered to have their faces painted or to jump in the inflatable moonwalk.
Sisters Jerika and Makiya Little hopped around in an inflatable bouncer shaped like a dog.
Meanwhile, the girls’ mother, Ursula, spun cotton candy while she stood at a table in the shade.
Some eight hours later, the elder Little said she was tired, but wouldn’t trade the day’s experience.
But the fun spread far beyond the youngsters at the park. Gray-haired Ida Whitney said she wouldn’t miss the fun day.
Everything available at Fun Day was free. Individuals, organizations and companies donated everything on hand, Reddick said.
