Mr. Warren Carldon “Junie” Gaskins, Jr., son of the late Lillian Ecklin Gaskins and the late Warren C. Gaskins of Blounts Creek and Bayview, North Carolina, died Saturday, September 1, 2007 in Norfolk General Hospital after a brief illness.
A self proclaimed ‘country boy’, he grew up in Bath and then moved to Blounts Creek where he met Thelma Taylor, his late wife of 52 years. Over the course of his 28 year career in the U.S. Navy, he traveled the world and progressed through the ranks from Seaman First Class to Chief Warrant Officer. Upon retirement, he joined the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration at the Norfolk facility.
He spent his retirement years traveling the United States - RV style and made friends wherever he went. He is much loved and will be missed by all.
He is survived by his loving wife of seven years, Jackie Gordon of Virginia Beach, Va.; his sister, Lillian Vann Paul of Washington; daughter Cathy Martin and her husband Mark of Perth, Australia; daughter Melinda Vann and husband David Silberstein of Crownsville, Maryland; son Mark Gaskins of Eugene, Oregon; stepchildren, Cheryl and Ken See of Ashburn, Virginia; Rick and Denise Gordon of Waxhaw, N.C.; Melody Gordon of Winnipeg, Canada; grandchildren Rachel Martin of North Canton, Ohio; Joshua Martin of Perth, Australia; and Devin and Rowan Crowder of Crownsville, Maryland; Brandon and Layla Gordon of Waxhaw, N.C.0; and Chanelle and Tyree Gordon of Winnipeg, Canada.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2007, at Kellum Funeral Home’s Rosewood Chapel at 601 N. Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, September 9, 2007, at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Dr. Michael Price.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Paul Funeral Home, Washington and other times at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and J. Bonner Paul, 309 Eden Drive, Smallwood, Washington.
