Mrs. Essie Sawyer Bateman, 88, of Columbia, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at Plumblee Nursing Center, Plymouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Royce Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bateman was born in Tyrrell County on June 22, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Algon and Sarah Voliva Sawyer. She was married to Joseph V. Bateman, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Sound Side Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Lola S. Brickhouse and Mildred S. Hassell of Columbia.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Beatrice S. Brickhouse, Lillian S. Davis and Thelma S. Hollis; and four brothers, Ottis Sawyer, Edward Sawyer, Rossie Sawyer and Sherman Sawyer.
The family will receive friends today from 7-9 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.
