Mrs. Addie Buchanan Burgess, age 94, of 208 W. 13th St. Washington, beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend died Wednesday morning, September 19, 2007 at Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home after a period of declining health.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery and will be conducted by Rev. Darryl Evans.
Affectionately known as “Buck” to her closest friends, Mrs. Burgess was born November 6, 1912 in Harnett County, NC, the youngest of eleven children of the late John Ambrose and Mary Thomas Buchanan. She was married to William Harvey Burgess of Washington on June 3, 1933, who preceded her in death on August 28, 1963.
She was educated in the Broadway public school system in Lee County, and later at Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing in Washington where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1934. She practiced private duty at Tayloe and Fowle Memorial Hospitals until 1952 when she became Director of the Beaufort County Nursing Home, a position she held until her retirement in July 1975. She is well remembered by many longtime families in Beaufort and surrounding counties for her devoted care of past loved ones. This community expressed its regard for her by nominating her as the Mother of the Year, an award given to her by the Washington Daily News in 1972. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington, a past assistant president of the Adult Sunday School Class, and was active with the church women and other phases of church work. Mrs. Burgess was a charter member of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Washington.
She is survived by one daughter: Elizabeth (Betsy) Burgess Lucas Modlin and her husband Carl McLean Modlin of Plymouth, two sons: John Buchanan Burgess and his wife, Sara Westmoreland Burgess of Bath, William (Bill) Lewis Burgess and his wife, Janet Forest Burgess of Blounts Creek; nine grand children: Jenny Lucas Mastin and her husband, Greg Mastin of Valdese, NC; Richard Cameron Lucas and his wife, Gayle Hicks of Hampton, VA, Louis Edwards Lucas Jr. and his wife, Wanda Cholerton Lucas of Angier, NC, Robin Burgess Webb of Columbia, SC, Sarah Alison Burgess of Sausalito, CA, Captain (USN) John B. Burgess Jr., MD and his wife Jessica Park Burgess of Virginia Beach, VA, William Buchanan Burgess and his wife Lisa of Knightdale, Khansas Burgess Elliott and her husband Mark of Bath, Kyle Burgess of Washington, six great grand children; Katherine Mastin Johnson and her husband Clint Johnson of Morganton, NC, Shelley K. Mastin of Boone, Ashley G. Lewis of Bath, Gage Webb of Supply, NC Louis McLean Lucas of Angier, NC, and James Cameron Lucas of Angier, NC; two nephews, Clyde Buchanan Rosser of Sanford, NC and David Smith Bitterman of Biscayne Bay, FL and four nieces, Mary Thomas Chandler of Fort Collins, CO, Mary McLaughlin Pope of Vass, NC, Martha Buchanan Gaddy of Cameron, NC, and Mary Buchanan Shaeffer of Southern Pines. She was also preceded in death by six sisters; Clara B. Rosser, Lena B. Thomas, Allie B. McLaughlin, Eula R. Buchanan, Jeanette C. Buchanan, and Lois B. Bitterman, and four brothers; W. Carl Buchanan, A. Glen Buchanan, J. Lewis Buchanan and L. Belton Buchanan.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff of Ridgewood Manor and to the caregivers of Ascera Care Hospice of Greenville for their care and compassion over the last several months.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2007 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
