Charlotte McNair Shytle (aka: Charley Brown), 93, completed her long-awaited journey into God’s eternal care on Tuesday morning, Sept. 18, at her home in Plymouth, N.C.
She was born in Plymouth, July 24, 1914, the sixth and youngest child of Jesse Thomas and Minnie Skiles McNair.
Having been baptized in the Roanoke River in 1925, she was the second oldest member of First Baptist Church in Plymouth, where she was a deaconess, Sunday school teacher, choir member, pianist, member of the historical committee, and resident comedienne.
She was also a member of the Plymouth Women’s Club, the Washington County Historical Society, the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary, and the Plymouth Players. She was also the first paid librarian in Washington County when the library was housed in the basement of the courthouse.
On July 12, 1947, she married the love of her life, Johnny Shytle, after being courted by him at her bedside for several months following an automobile accident.
She loved her family, her friends, her church, and her Lord. She played the piano since the age of eight until arthritis claimed her hands. Her collection of shoes and handbags was extensive, but she was best known for her love of bright color and hats.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Enoch Ludford and Jesse Bryan McNair; one sister, Emma McNair Swain, and a special niece, Naomi Swain Joyner.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, John Oscar Shytle; her daughter, Naomi Shytle Roberson (and Wiley) of Williamston; one stepson, William Douglas Shytle (and Maryann) of Union Grove; one grandson, Andrew Jay Ittenbach of Raleigh; one sister-in-law, Lillie Mae Cagle of East Flat Rock; two special nephews, James Joyner Swain (and Frances) of Big Canoe, GA (whom she helped raise as his second mother); and Thomas Ludford McNair (and Mary Ann) of Wenatchee, WA; two special nieces, Anna Ruth McNair Chapman (and Dan) of Norfolk, VA; and her namesake, Mary Charlotte McNair Nance of Leland, N.C.; two step-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren, and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at First Baptist Church in Plymouth with Rev. Terry Jones and Rev. Jimmy Hagwood officiating. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall Thursday, Sept. 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at 109 Country Club Drive in Plymouth.

It was Charley Brown’s wish that no flowers be sent to mourn her passing because she had received and enjoyed so many thoughtful floral tributes during her lifetime.
