EDENTON, NC. — Elizabeth A. Mathews, 64, of Edenton, North Carolina died on Monday, October 8, 2007 at Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Mathews was born in Burgaw, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late Reverend Anthony and Etta Hathaway.
Mrs. Mathews was a Registered Nurse for forty-four years and worked as the Assistant Director of Nursing for the Northeastern Region of the North Carolina Department of Correction. Survivors include her husband, Herbert “Matt” Mathews; daughter, Crystal (Sam) Walker of Fredericksburg, Va.; son, Carl “Tony” Mathews of Edenton; daughter-in-law, Kateena Mathews of Atlantic City, NJ; three brothers, Anthony Hathaway, III of Edenton, Roger (Ida) Hathaway, of Hampton, Va., Reverend Gary (Cathy) Hathaway of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Teresa (John) Jordan of Edenton; Reverend Edna (Calvin) Lawrence of Chesapeake, Va.; six grandchildren, and one great grandson.
Celebration services will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2007, at Edenton United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 225 Virginia Road, Edenton, NC. Mrs. Mathews will lie in repose from 11-12:45 p.m. and the funeral will begin at 1 p.m.
The family will receive friends at 324 Old Hertford Road, Edenton, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested, in memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Mathews, for the Kadesh-Chowan Cultural Heritage Foundation, P.O. Box 1124, Edenton, NC. 27932.
The Mathews Family has entrusted services to Rowson Funeral Home, 104 North Oakum Street, Edenton, NC.
