Quarterback Brad Roach threw for a career-high 486 yards and four touchdowns to lead 12th-ranked Catawba past seventh-ranked Carson-Newman 55-49 on Saturday.
Roach, who led his team back from a 35-13 deficit, was 37-of-64 for the 486 yards. He threw for four scores and was not intercepted.
The senior had scoring tosses of 41, 28, 9 and 1 yards in the game.
Roach came close to eclipsing a handful of Catawba passing records, just missing out on passing yards (492), completions (38) and attempts (66). Luke Samples owns all those records, doing so against Carson-Newman four years ago.
The four touchdown throws matched a school-best, done 11 times previously, the last by Samples in the game against Carson-Newman.
For the season, Roach is 114-of-192 (59.4 percent) for 1,665 yards. He’s thrown 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.
On the ground, the former Williamston High School standout has rushed for 79 yards and three scores on 23 carries.
Roach and the Indians (7-0, 3-0 South Atlantic) play at Tusculum in a 1:30 p.m. game next Saturday.
WILSON
C.J. Wilson, a defensive end for the East Carolina Pirates, had a solid game in Saturday’s 45-42 overtime win against UTEP.
The sophomore had three tackles, three quarterback hurries and a blocked PAT that led to two points for the Pirates.
For the season, Wilson, a former standout at Northside High School, has 23 tackles, including four sacks, seven quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one blocked field goal and one blocked PAT.
The Pirates (4-3, 3-1 C-USA) play host to N.C. State at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday.
GODDARD, MOORE
Trimane Goddard, a strong safety for the North Carolina Tar Heels, had five tackles in Saturday’s 21-15 loss to South Carolina.
For the season, Goddard, a former standout at Roanoke High School, has 30 tackles, one interception, one sack and two forced fumbles.
Former Washington High School standout Jock Moore, a fullback, did not participate in the game.
The Heels (2-5, 1-3 ACC), off next week, play at Wake Forest on Oct. 27.
HAYWOOD, WHITNEY, RODGERS
Bryan Haywood scored two touchdowns and Davelle Whitney had an interception lead help lead North Carolina Wesleyan to a 49-7 romp over Averett University.
Haywood ran for a game-high 127 yards on 12 carries, including a 23-yard TD run in the third quarter. He also had two catches for 48 yards, including a 35-yard scoring snag in the second, and a 20-yard kickoff return.
For the year, Haywood, a former standout at Southside High School, has 50 carries for 444 yards and four touchdowns, nine receptions for 95 yards and a score, and nine kickoff returns for 161 yards (17.9 average).
Whitney, a former teammate of Haywood’s at Southside, had an interception and five tackles. For the year, Whitney has a total of 20 tackles, two interceptions and a sack on the year.
Nigel Rodgers, a former standout at Washington High School and the starting free safety for the Bishops, didn’t play. He has six tackles and one fumble recovery this season.
The Bishops (4-2, 3-0 USA South) return to action next Saturday in a 1 p.m. home game against Shenandoah University.
PALMER
Greg Palmer, a linebacker for the Chowan Hawks, came up with a career-high 11 tackles in Saturday’s 51-0 loss to Coastal Carolina.
For the season, Palmer, a former standout at Northside High School, has 22 tackles, one sack, one pass deflection and one quarterback hurry.
The Hawks (1-6) play host to North Greenville University at noon next Saturday.
CLEMMONS
Jamaine Clemmons, a defensive lineman for the N.C. State Wolfpack, and his teammates were off this week.
Clemmons, a former standout at Williamston High School, is out “indefinitely” with an ankle injury.
The Wolfpack (1-4, 0-3 ACC) returns to action Saturday in a 4:30 p.m. game at East Carolina.
LAWRENCE
Gerald Lawrence, a linebacker and former standout at Washington High School, did not play for Elizabeth City in Saturday’s 23-14 win over Virginia Union.
The Vikings (3-4, 3-1 CIAA) play host to Livingstone on homecoming in 1:30 p.m. game next Saturday.
BRACEY, O’NEAL, JOHNSON, JARMAN, JONES
A handful of former area athletes are playing volleyball at Pitt Community College.
Former Williamston High School star Michelle Bracey has 102 kills, 46 blocks and 11 digs for the Bulldogs (12-9, 11-3 Region X). Former Williamston teammate Lauren O’Neal has 27 kills and four blocks.
Former Southside standouts Augusta Johnson, Danielle Jarman and Ashley Jones are also on the Bulldogs. Johnson has 18 kills, 14 blocks and four digs. Jarman has come up with 17 kills and 14 kills. Jones has accumulated 58 digs and nine service aces.
JOYNER, MARSH
Former Terra Ceia standout Derek Joyner carded a team-best 75 to lift the Pitt Community Bulldogs to a tournament win, as the team finished with a 312.
B.J. Marsh, a former standout at Northside High School, was a shot back at 76.
Marsh paced the Bulldogs with a 70 and Joyner fired a 71 in the Hurricane UFO Dispute Intercollegiate Match earlier this year.
