Bryan Haywood ran for a game-high 120 yards and two scores for North Carolina Wesleyan’s in Saturday’s 41-9 win over Shenandoah University.
Haywood scored on runs of 40 yards in the third quarter and 8 yards in the first quarter. He gained the 120 yards on just 13 carries. Haywood also had one catch for 8 yards.
For the year, Haywood, a former standout at Southside High School, has 63 carries for 564 yards and six touchdowns, 10 receptions for 103 yards and a score, and nine kickoff returns for 161 yards (17.9 average).
Davelle Whitney and Nigel Rodgers also played for the Bishops. Both finished with 2.5 tackles in the win.
Whitney, a former teammate of Haywood’s at Southside, has a total of 22.5 tackles, two interceptions and a sack on the year.
Rodgers, a former standout at Washington High School, has 8.5 tackles and one fumble recovery this season.
The Bishops (5-2, 4-0 USA South) return to action next Saturday in a 1 p.m. game at Christopher Newport University.
ROACH
Brad Roach threw a pair of touchdown passes for No. 7 Catawba College in Saturday’s 31-28 loss to Tusculum.
Roach was 23-of-43 for 308 yards with the two scores and three interceptions. His scoring tosses covered 17 and 13 yards. Roach also ran for three yards on two carries.
For the season, Roach is 137-of-235 (58.3 percent) for 1,973 yards. He’s thrown 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
On the ground, the former Williamston High School standout has rushed for 82 yards and three scores on 25 carries.
Roach and the Indians (7-1, 3-1 South Atlantic) play host to Wingate in a 1:30 p.m. game next Saturday.
WILSON
C.J. Wilson, a defensive end for the East Carolina Pirates, had two tackles and a quarterback hurry in Saturday’s 34-20 loss to N.C. State.
For the season, Wilson, a former standout at Northside High School, has 25 tackles, including four sacks, eight quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one blocked field goal and one blocked PAT.
The Pirates (4-4, 3-1 C-USA) play host to UAB at 3 p.m. next Saturday.
GODDARD, MOORE
Trimane Goddard, Jock Moore and the rest of the North Carolina Tar Heels had the weekend off.
For the season, Goddard, a safety and former standout at Roanoke High School, has 30 tackles, one interception, one sack and two forced fumbles.
Moore, a fullback and former standout at Washington High School, has not compiled any stats to date.
The Heels (2-5, 1-3 ACC) play at Wake Forest in a noon game next Saturday.
PALMER
Greg Palmer, a linebacker for the Chowan Hawks, had one tackle in Saturday’s 56-14 loss to North Greenville University.
For the season, Palmer, a former standout at Northside High School, has 23 tackles, one sack, one pass deflection and two quarterback hurries.
The Hawks (1-7) travel to Babson Park, Fla., to face Webber International University at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
CLEMMONS
Jamaine Clemmons, a defensive lineman for the N.C. State Wolfpack, did not record any stats in Saturday’s 34-20 win over East Carolina.
Clemmons, a former standout at Williamston High School, has three tackles and one quarterback pressure this season.
The Wolfpack (2-5, 0-3 ACC) returns to action Saturday in a 4:30 p.m. game at home against Virginia.
LAWRENCE
Gerald Lawrence, a linebacker and former standout at Washington High School, did not play for Elizabeth City in Saturday’s 55-8 win over Livingstone.
The Vikings (4-4, 4-1 CIAA) play at St. Paul’s in Lawrenceville, Va., in 1 p.m. game next Saturday.
BRACEY, O’NEAL, JOHNSON, JARMAN, JONES
A handful of former area athletes are playing volleyball at Pitt Community College.
Former Williamston High School star Michelle Bracey has 129 kills, 53 blocks and 15 digs. Former Williamston teammate Lauren O’Neal has 31 kills and 13 blocks.
Three former Southside High School standouts also play for the Bulldogs. Augusta Johnson has 19 kills, 23 assists and 18 blocks. Danielle Jarman has come up with 21 kills, 25 digs and five blocks. Ashley Jones has 71 digs and 11 service aces.
JOYNER
Former Terra Ceia standout Derek Joyner, now a freshman with the Pitt Community College Bulldogs, finished 27th out of 105 golfers in the Coker College Intercollegiate, held Oct. 15-16.
Joyner had rounds of 78 and 72 to finish with a 150.
The Bulldogs finished 14th out of 21 teams.
VALENTI
Gina Valenti, former star runner at Washington High School, and the Lees-McRae Bobcats won the Conference Carolina cross country championship on Saturday.
Lees-McRae beat out 11 other schools in the meet, held in Spartanburg, S.C.
Valenti was the sixth runner to cross for Lees-McRae, finishing 16th overall in a time of 20 minutes, 26.57 seconds. The freshman just missed out on earning all-conference honorable mention.
The Bobcats will run in the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Nov. 3.
