Miss Mona Jarvis, age 97, a resident of 116 Isabella Avenue, Washington Park, died Wednesday night, October 24, 2007 at the Ridgewood Manor Nursing Center.
A private family graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Oakdale Cemetery officiated by Dr. Richard Harrison, Minister of the Seventh Street Christian Church in Richmond, VA, who is also a nephew-in-law of Miss Jarvis. Miss Amanda Driskill, Associate Minister of the First Christian Church in Washington, will assist.
Miss Jarvis was born in Lake Landing, Hyde County, the daughter of the late Walter and Laura Silverthorne Jarvis. She graduated from Washington High School in 1928. She attended East Carolina Teacher’s College, which later became East Carolina University. She received a B.S. and M.A. in elementary education. She taught in the Washington City Schools for 43 years. Her principal and superintendent deemed her a dedicated master teacher.
Mona loved her church and spent many years serving in every area and on various committees in the life of the church. She was one of the first women elders in the First Christian Church and was invited to Charleston, SC to teach and train church school teachers.
Survivors include one sister, Callaree Jarvis Horton of Washington; three nephews: William P. Dickinson, Jr. and wife, Barbara of Richmond, VA, Carroll Jarvis and wife, Betty of Bath, Jay Barnhill of Wilson and Bath; four nieces: Pamela Pelletier of Washington, Mona P. Harrison and husband, Richard Harrison of Richmond, Jeanie Hensley and husband, Jim of Palmetta, FL and Ada Lou Alligood and husband, Larry of Southport. Also, a great niece and niece-in-law, Leigh Campbell and Elizabeth Barnhill of Raleigh.
Miss Jarvis has survived four sisters: Ada, Ione, Maggie Bell and Millicent and three brothers: Hubert, Merritt and Walter Guy.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Callaree Horton, 213 Lawson Road in Smallwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Christian Church Christian Women’s Fellowship, the Building Fund or Lights of Love.
The family deeply appreciates the kindness and care shown Mona while she has been homebound and also at Ridgewood Manor and Hospice ASERA.
