Miss Rachel Lea Swindell, 87, a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, Swan Quarter, and formerly of 650 E. Main St., Belhaven, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Cross Creek.
A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in St. Reddick Missionary Baptist Church, Belhaven, with the Rev. James Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Northside Cemetery.
Miss Swindell was born in Hyde County on March 8, 1920. She was the daughter of the late Lumas and Nita Gilliam Swindell. She was educated in Hyde County. She began work early with the late Mary Elizabeth Bell, helping her in her guest home. After Mrs. Bell’s death, she became the principal resident of the home. She was among the oldest members of St. Reddick Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a lifelong usher.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews living in North Carolina and New York.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Swindell, Tommy Swindell and Alphonso Swindell and one sister, Pecola Swindell.
A gathering for family and friends is being hosted Friday and Saturday by Jesse and Gloria Swindell Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Doug Barnes at 320 W. Pantego St., Belhaven.
